No Smoking.

Attached is the first in a series of emails from our overly intrusive landlords:

> Mark & I were in the backyard today to meet with the landscaper to decide on what we are going to plant in the backyard.

> We found a cigarette butt near the back fence & found 2 cigarette butts on the ground next to the back steps. From the beginning, we have been very clear about this being a NON-SMOKING house - not in the house, not in the backyard, not on the property. The lease is very clear on this issue, #7 - F.

> Additionally, we were assured by all of you that none of you smoke. None of our employees smoke. I checked with the painter & none of his employees smoke. We can only assume that it was someone's friend/guest who did. We are requesting that you tell your friends of the smoking restriction. If they want to smoke, they must do it out on 9th St. There is no smoking on the premises.

> Nicholas told us about the shower curtain rings not operating properly. I ordered more today but it will take about 10 days for this special order. I also purchased & put down an additional floor mat in front of the sliding door to deal with dirt & wetness from the backyard. Mark is working on the toilet noise in Nicholas & Joe's shared bathroom.

> Joe - Mark still needs to talk to you about dealing with the protectors for your bed frame.

> Tim - I was looking through the lease & noted that there were 2 pages that were not initialed by you - pages 3 & 6. If you could initial those two pages & give them to Amanda, she can give them to me on Saturday. I will give you a copy of them for your files. Thanks!!!!!

Introduction

2211 & 2213 9th Street: The Landlords from Hell:

This post is intended to prevent the pain and suffering of future generations of tenants. DO NOT RENT 2211 OR 2213 9TH STREET. If you are equivocal, or think that we might have been difficult tenants, or that our experiences might be idiosyncratic, let me reiterate: THE HORROR! THE HORROR! DO NOT RENT THESE PROPERTIES.

Should you choose to rent from these landlords, whom I will refer to with the noms de guerre Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz, you will deeply regret it. You will suffer at their hands financially, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually, as I have. The micsonduct, illegality, and malfeasance that the Kurtz' have inflicted upon as reads like a compilation of tenant horror stories. This is not an urban myth, a joke, or a
precocious act of vengeance -- these events actually occurred here at 2211 9th Street, Berkley, CA, USA, Planet Earth.

And we are, unfortunately, the current residents at 2211 9th St.

You just might be wondering why four people, who span a multitude of ages:
31, 29, 26, and 21

and occupations:
-Post Doctoral Researcher,
-a PhD student,
-a legal consultant,
-and a restaurant server

have spent so much time and effort to setup a blog about our experiences living here at 2211 9th St. Berkeley, CA 94710?

Well, after our experience here, we couldn't help but feel morally obliged to inform possible future tenants of the 2211 and 2213 9th St. compound of what they will be getting themselves into.

Please, as we have taken the time to tell our horror stories about our landlords, read ahead at your leisure. Let us know our efforts were not in vain and that we have prevented someone else from experiencing the stress, anxiety, heartache and insomnia that have arisen while dealing with them.
